"THIN ICE" 1/9
(please click "Day 1")

Summary: Garrow asks Norrington to give a testimony of character for a sailor on trial at the Old Bailey. Gillette is happy to be back in London, but his captain isn't made for city life. Southouse is confronted with a puzzle while Sarah Garrow and her maid Mary try to solve the case of a kitchenmaid accused of theft.

Upset that Norrington seems to prefer the company of the Garrow-family to his own, Gillette returns to his old haunt and meets David Jasker, who's just been released from Newgate prison. And behind the scenes, an old enemy of William Garrow is seeking revenge.

:D I am filled with glee! This is wonderful. I love your writing style and your grasp of the character. The way you deftly described the scene, established Southouse's position, let us know where Sarah and Will were at in their lives, and set up the story for the next chapter was just enthralling! So well accomplished and natural. Anything that reads with the kind of ease and pleasure that does is the product of some serious skill and thought! THANK YOU. I really look forward to seeing how Silvester's role in the whole thing plays out. It's always fascinating watching him relate to Will.

I <3 the part about how he's "tolerable on the fortepiano"! Oh, dear. LOL. With his pianist's fingers, one would hope so.

And the detail about the frostbite treatment! So... damn, just the whole thing! :D

((bounces happily))

Thanks so much for your lovely comments! :-D I hope you'll enjoy the rest of the story, and I can promise you that Silvester will be very busy. ;)

As I almost exclusively write Age of Sail fiction, the 18th century is my "home territory", that helps a lot. I don't think I could write anything readable set in the Victorian age, for example. It must be the wigs! (And the uniforms, of course!)
